How do I get to the area from New Delhi?

From Delhi: There are four main options: Plane, Train, Bus or Private Car.

By Plane: Kingfisher has 1-2 daily non-stop flights from New Delhi to Dharamsala, 1 hour 25 mins. duration. Tickets can be booked on line through www.yatra.com, www.cleartrip.com, www.makemytrip.com. Book early as May-June is high season for the area and the flights sell out in advance. Prices rise closer to the departure date (ranging from Rs 5,000 – 8,000 one-way, with the roundtrip prices becoming more economical.) From the Dharamsala airport, you can take a taxi (Rs 500) to the local hotels in Dharamsala, McLeod Ganj, Bhasgu or Dharamkot.

By Train: You must travel to Pathankot (12 hours, come off at the station just after Mukerian or at Chakki Bank or at Pathankot if the station is open – ask the conductor when you board). Trains must be booked in advance either on-line (www.irctc.co.in or www.cleartrip.com or through a travel agent). From the Pathankot area, you can take a taxi (approx. Rs 1,500, 2.5 hours) to the Dharamsala/McLeod Ganj/Bhagsu area or a public bus (approx. Rs 100, 5 hours).

By Bus: There is a night bus from Delhi (Rs 650 – Rs 1,200 depending on the company and if it is a Volvo bus, which is more comfortable) that will also take you as far as McLeod Ganj. The private buses generally depart from Pahar Ganj/Main Bazaar and/or the Tibetan village in New Delhi around 17:00, and arrive by approximately 8:00 to McLeod Ganj. The Volvo bus is run by the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) and departs from New Delhi-ISBT. Buses must be pre-booked by a travel agent or directly at the HRTC office. There is also an on-line booking service for the private buses at www.makemytrip.com.

By Car: You can hire a car and driver to bring you to the area from Delhi (Rs 7,500 and upwards depending on the car quality, AC, etc. 10 hours). Best to work with a local travel agent.

How do I travel once in the Dharamsala area?

Depending on where you are staying, it is generally easy to travel by foot in the general area of the DFF. Within McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Dharamkot, you can generally only walk.

To travel to TIPA from McLeod Ganj, you can hire a rickshaw at the rickshaw stand by the main square or walk up the hill along TIPA road (approximately 7 minutes). From Bhagsu, rickshaws can easily be hired from the taxi stand, or you can walk to TIPA, taking the short cut through the monastery on Bhasgunag Road. From Dharamkot it is also a relatively easy walk to the TIPA complex or a rickshaw can be hired. From Dharamsala, typically a taxi is required. Any local agent or guest house can arrange for taxi service. There are also shared jeeps that travel regularly between Dharamsala-McLeod Ganj (Rs 20) and rickshaws between McLeod Ganj and Bhagsu (Rs 40).
